R.I.P. baby groundhog

Tonight, Beignet brought me a special gift. I looked outside and saw her on the deck, but then I noticed she had something in her mouth and it appeared to have feet. I freaked out, went out there, and told her to drop it. She was all too happy to lay it at my feet-- she was obviously QUITE proud of herself for bringing it to me.

It looks like a baby groundhog, probably one of the babies of that big groundhog I saw in the yard the other day. I can only hope that Beignet didn't kill it and found it dead, but I seriously doubt that to be the case. When I picked it up in a towel to dispose of it, it was still pliable and warm. It was disgusting and sad all at the same time. Poor little baby! I cried a little bit. I feel like I should be mad at Beignet, but it's not her fault...she was just following her instinct. Sad. It just makes me wonder if the mama groundhog is out back, trying to find the baby...great, I'm starting to get teary again.

This is the first time Beignet has ever brought me an animal. One time she brought me a skull of an animal, but it was obviously really old and therefore not as gross and disturbing.

Our cat, Oreo, used to bring us "presents." It's sad, but they like to do it.

I hope Beignet just found the groundhog baby and didn't kill it. The first kill is the gateway drug to blood lust. Our German Shepherd killed some creature and before you know it, she was biting off our neighbor's dog's private part. We then sold her to an ex-mafioso transexual named Debbie. True story.

Oh Blair, you have such great stories. Whenever I go into Jo-Ann fabrics, I think of you. I'm sure you know why...ahem...

My 7 year old German Shepard has a habit of every Spring bringing me home a present. Black Snakes, groundhogs, opossums seem to be the main fare. He used to live on a much bigger farm before I got him so 're-training" him of this behavior doesn't seem possible.
Tonight was walking him & he spotted a groundhog in the field some 50 -60 yards away. He covered that distance in 5 seconds with 3 leaps & was on that groundhog so quick it didn't have a chance.
Next thing I saw was groundhog in the vise of my dogs jaws & him shaking it from side to side.Fur flying. Game Over. That one was about 12 lbs.
Surprisingly my dog is very good with children & very docile around me & the family and other people(the Vet,Neighbors etc). His mild temperament is such you'd never expect him to harm a flea.

Well, don't put the wrong critter in front of him... perhaps he thought he was protecting me..He wouldn't leave that kill until I walked up inspected it & told him to COME NOW! It was too heavy to bring home although he did try to drag it, I told him to put it down. No problem, he left it in the field. Now I will have to get up early & bury it before the buzzards come out tomorrow.

I really hate to tell you that your baby ground hog is not a ground hog at all, its a shrew. kind of like a mole, i believe shrews are blind. check out the nose on that thing. ground hogs have squrrel like noses. I actually have 2 baby ground hogs now, i am bottle feeding.
